Protection of Areas

Protecting Yourself and Your Space

When you have ringworm kittens, you’ll want to protect your environment, your supplies, and yourself to ensure that the fungal spores are not spreading. Whenever coming into contact with the kittens or their space, you will want to:

  • Use protective gloves

  • Wear protective clothing such as a smock or a large shirt - keep that inside the same room, DO NOT take it out of the room until laundry day.

  • Wear booties/socks - These are really affordable, you can buy a pack of 500 for about $10, and this worth the cost.

  • Put your hair up into a bun and avoid touching your face and hair.

  • Avoid bringing any unnecessary items with you, like mobile phones, otherwise, you will have to sanitize them after.

The Space

Put the cats or kittens in a space that is easy to clean, a bathroom or laundry is perfect for this, as these are mostly tiled spaces.

Make sure to only put things that can be washed or disinfected in their space, or use things that are single use and can be easily thrown away afterwards. You’ll still want to give the kittens toys and enrichment of course, but try using plush toys that can be washed, or DIY toys that can be tossed after. DO NOT move these items back into your house area until they have been sanitized.a

The laundry is actually the best place, as usually they have a door to the outside, where you can take all supplies directly outside for cleaning, rather than having to carry them through the house.

Litter Trays

You have a couple of options, you can use plastic litter trays, but they must be cleaned with vet grade disinfectant, or you can cut boxes down and put a liner in the box and throw them away.
